Spirometry is a pulmonary function test that is used to diagnose asthma, COPD and other lung diseases. It is also frequently used in occupational health to assess an employee’s fitness to wear a respirator and to monitor the employee’s lung health over time. With spirometry, changes in lung function can be detected before symptoms develop. The earlier a patient is diagnosed, the sooner a treatment plan can be initiated. With a plan in place, the future burden of lung disease can be reduced and ultimately eliminated.
A spirometry test measures how much and how fast a patient can expel air from their lungs. The test is simple and takes about 10 minutes to complete. With simple training, spirometry can be done anywhere from the primary care office to the pulmonary function lab.
